A seed phrase is a recovery backup for a Bitcoin wallet. Anyone with the phrase may be able to control the wallet, so protecting it is one of the most important parts of self-custody.
A seed phrase is a sequence of words created by a wallet to back up the keys used to control bitcoin. It lets a compatible trusted wallet recover access if a device is lost, damaged, or replaced.
Many wallets use 12-word or 24-word formats. The order and spelling of every word matter: an incorrect word or position can prevent recovery. In a self-custody setup, the wallet provider does not normally keep a recoverable copy for you.

There is no universal best method. The right balance depends on your experience, risks, recovery plan, and ability to maintain it.
